cross-posted to a few add communities--sorry if youre reading it multiple times... [12 Aug 2009|11:20pm]

I am just coming back to LJ after a long hiatus due to Facebook sucking me in and becoming all-consuming. I still use FB, but have decided that I miss having this outlet. I'm looking for some people who will read my entries, comment when they have something to say that's worth saying, and above all, not be judgemental of me or my thoughts/ramblings. My journal is friends only, and for a good reason. Ask and I'll tell you about it. Therefore, if you want to read anything you'll have to add me first. Then if you don't like me or my writing, you can always unfriend me. Here's some random stuff about me:

-38 years old. Still young enough at heart to be able to relate to peple in their 20's, but absolutely not ANYONE under 18.
-Classic cartoon fan. Nothing (almost) made after the mid 1980's. and definitely NO ANIME!! My wife likes anime, and I can't figure out the appeal for the life of me. All the characters look the same. I can't tell what show she's watching by looking at the characters because they all look aloie. Same pointy chin and HUGE round eyes. Asian people don't have round eyes, so why are they drawn that way? I just don't get it.
-Music geek. I listen to a wide variety of music but there are a few things I will not listen to or discuss. Techno, MOST rap, that garbage that passes for R&B these days, "House" music, boy bands, pop music, that crap that passes for Punk Rock these days are among those things. The music I like the most is classic rock, jam bands, jazz, orchestral music, old school country music, classic R&B (ie early Motown, the Philly Sound, etc.), some of my favorites can be found listed in my interets on my info page. I don't care if our musical tastes differ. I do, however, talk about music a good bit, and it will help if you are at least familiar with something outside the top 40.
-I write about a wide range of things, from random musings to political rants, to music, what I did today, things that bother me, etc. I do the occaisional quiz or random meme if I'm bored enough. They are usually behind a cut to save your friends page.
-I am a democrat, but I am not as liberal as most democrats are.
- I am from New York. As such I am passionate about my sports teams and the rivalries thereof. Therefore if you are a Red Sox fan or a Dodgers fan, you're going to hate me during baseball season. Period.
-I hate people who TyPe LiKe ThIs or ay "ur" when they mean "your" or "you're" or use the number 2 or 4 in place of a word. If you do that, don't add me. It bothers me no end, and I WILL call you out on it for being either uneducated or just plain lazy.
-I am a good listener when you have something you want to talk about and I will always offer advice if you need it, and I'm not one of those people who gets insulted if you don't take my advice.
-I am looking to get to know people, not just add people to a list like a name collection. If you are looking to add me to a collection and have no intention of interacting with me, don't bother.

I dunno what else to say, so if you want to know more, just ask.

[13 Mar 2009|11:57am]

Hey y'all! My name's Holly-Renee (pick one name or the other, I use both - don't ask, it's confusing), I'm 20 years old, and I just moved to Brooklyn from Tampa, Florida. A week ago, in fact. I added about every single NYC-related community because, well, I only REALLY know one person around here, so I'd like to find out what the hell's going on around town!

A bit about me: I managed to find myself a job up here, working as a canvasser (possibly community organizer when my training period is up) for ACORN. I'm already opinionated and interested in social justice, I might as well make a living out of shouting from my soap box, right? So that takes up most of my time. Monday through Friday, I work 3-9pm, so I get more accomplished during the day. I can't wait for tomorrow!

I am a music geek. I put as much emphasis as possible on the word. I started a music blog with five other folks called eclecticsix, so I'm always thinking about music if I'm not listening to it. I tend to lean more towards the garage/punk side of rock and roll, but I really am one of those people who listen to EVERYTHING. Here's my last.fm profile, take a look! It's actually taken some time for me to realize that I will run in to people in the city who like the same obscure music as I do. If you like the Dirtbombs, you probably need to be my best friend (although my BFF here already likes them, it's always fun to have more around!)

I also dig art (I still need to go to MOMA) and literature an awful lot. Although, like I said, I'm a music geek, so much of the books I read have to do with music. Haha.

So... feel free to add me! I don't bite. And I'm pretty rad. I should just put some testimonials up here from friends.

Hey, I'm Kaitlin. :]. [19 Feb 2009|10:43pm]

Hey! I'm Kaitlin.

I'm nineteen years old and I live in Manhattan, NYC. I got to school at NYU and I'm a Film major. I'm also a professional photographer.

Interests: Photography (obviously) and writing, and I also love anime, video games, history and biology. My biggest love ever is Scotland and Mary Queen of Scots. (Basically just read my profile.)

Music: Nickel Creek. Muse. The Who. Matchbox Twenty. The Dresden Dolls. Elton John. The Offspring. Loreena McKennitt. Arcade Fire. Gogol Bordello. Iron Maiden.

Anime: Neon Genesis Evangelion. Tekkonkinkreet. School Days. Mnemosyne. Noir. Gankutsuou. Strawberry Panic!, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Naruto. FLCL. Code Geass. Death Note.

Video Games: Bioshock. Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Portal. Half-Life Series. Gears of War. The Legend of Zelda Series. Assassin's Creed. Basically anything Nintendo.

Books: Farenheit 451 (Ray Bradbury). The Historian (Elizabeth Kostova). Season of the Witch (Natasha Mostert). His Dark Materials (Philip Pullman). The Abhorsen Trilogy (Garth Nix). The Collector (John Fowles).

I also realllly love Arrested Development, Sex & the City and South Park.

I'm very nerdy and very open-minded. I love talking to all sorts of people, but I do like it if we have something in common, be it fandoms, music, views on life, anything.

I am VERY active on LJ. I post practically every single day (except weekends) and comment frequently. Because of this I also appreciate it when people are active commenters and posters. I like actually getting to know the people on my friends list and not having them just be another number. :].

[19 Feb 2009|02:00pm]

Hello, my name is Mihael~ I am one of the 8,274,527 people in Manhattan and absolutely love it. I am currently a forensic psych major but am trying to transfer into FIT or Parsons to major in fashion design since that career path fits in more with my plans for life.

I have a girlfriend (if homosexuality bothers you, look elsewhere) and I'm absolutely in love with her. We are moving in together soonish and plan on getting married. We want to own an apartment here in Manhattan and a ranch in Wyoming. My relationship with her is a big part of my life so she comes up in my posts a lot. Sometimes I post about sappy things that only people in couples and hopeless romantics like to hear.

I'm very nerdy but also very girly. I absolutely adore anime, Harry Potter, video games, internet memes, and Lord of the Rings. But I also love fashion, cosmetics, shoes, rainbows, and other things typically associated with people who have two X chromosomes.

I do things like run through Times Square singing lyrics from bad boy bands. I convert popular songs into proper Olde English. I believe that Shakespeare was a sadist who wrote his plays for the sole purpose of torturing high school students for years to come.

If I sound like someone you'd like to add, comment here or on my friends only post! I'll add you back. But please, be active and actually interested in getting to know me. I like to know the people on my friends list, not just have them as numbers.

THE END OF OUR AFFAIR [07 Jan 2009|11:48am]

She spills everything she's hidden
out onto the hardwood floor
And watches you watching her
trying to get out the back door

She is confused and grieving
all of the things that she's done
It's one of those days where you wake up
And one plus one equals none

So it's the end of our affair
The end of our tiny white charade
I was the beaten down piano
And you were the piece that was played

And you were like my mirror
Reflecting all I couldn't feel
Answering every question that I asked
And proving that living's a big deal

But I was unavailable to give
All the love I gave so easily to you
Attention that I can't hold back
That seems to melt into truth

And what can I be but your vision
Of all that I wish you would make me be
But I'm just a pathetic excuse of a woman
And this is our reality

So it was nothing more than a moment
In perfection that I'd gladly give again
A guilt filled attraction that grabs me
And takes my heart to it's ends

And what can I do but let go
Of what it is that you make sound so great
I have made choices and I must live up to them
But you will never be a mistake

[05 Sep 2008|02:35pm]

I'm 22, a recent college grad, and a cub reporter in New York City. The best part of my job is that I see something new everyday, and I write about it a lot. Also, other variations on the general theme of figuring out life in the real world. I was going to move to Cambodia but now I think I might just move to Brooklyn instead. My attention span is rapidly shrinking. I'm desperately afraid of failure and one-year leases. I'll do almost anything once, but I'm not as impulsive as I wish I was. I'm obsessed with zoning law, old elevators, and hot air balloons. I also enjoy baseball and cheap beer. I'm a little bit of a masochist, and prone to frequent moral crises. I care about politics, domestic and international. To steal from E.B. White, "I arise in the morning torn between a desire to improve the world and a desire to enjoy the world. This makes it hard to plan the day." I really just want to do something that matters. I'm a lapsed Catholic. I believe in the Oxford comma and the kindness of strangers. I also believe that everyone has a story, and I want to hear it. Wanna be friends?

ISO new friends... [27 May 2008|12:33am]

I just did a massive friends cut. It seems that the average person on my friends list hasn't posted in over a year. So yeah, I need some new reading material. I like to get to know the people on my friend's list. I don't comment on every entry, but I do if I have something relevant to say. I expect the same, and nothing more. I am male, and over 30. I don't mind having friends younger than I am, in fact, more than half my friends are, but I want friends over 18. I have nothing in common with High School kids. I love music. I listen to improvisational music (Jam bands and Jazz mostly), but I also love classic rock, punk rock, metal, etc. See my interests for some examples. I love comedy. I hate sappy love stories and chick flicks, unless Drew Barrymore is in them, in which case I make an exception. I don't read many books because I dont have tons of free time, but I assure you, I am quite literate. I don't TyPe LiKe ThIs and I don't use internet abbreviations like "ur" and "4" when I mean "for" or "2" when I mean "to" or "two". I know the difference between "your"and "you're" as well as the difference between "their", "there", and "they're". I expect my friends to also know the difference. I don't watch too much TV, but I still dig the old school sit-coms and I love the History Channel. Anything else you want to know, just ask. Comment to be added.

Copied from my profile

Chris. 31. Divorced. Childless. Part-time personnel consultant, part-time Psych student (yeab, I'm pretty old for that, but whatever) Enjoys a wide variety of activities including, but not limited to, basketball, baseball, rock-climbing, gymming, hiking, racing, photography, and everything else in my interests.

I'm not fantastic or anything, just your average Joe in a city that never sleeps. I'm terribly boring, really. But I feel the need to journal and this as good a place as any. I'm new, but I spent quite some time familiarizing myself with the site, so you could say I'm an informed newbie. I'm not new to online blogging, though.

I blog about day-to-day stuff, sometimes I get deep, sometimes I just ramble and you should ignore it. I'm often depressed, but I try not to let it interfere with the shreds of positivity that I have.

I don't care who adds me, but I do keep my entries protected. Just drop me a comment to let me know you've added me and we'll all be friends.

Maybe moving to New York [07 Jan 2008|12:50pm]

Hi everyone; I have just been searching for LJ communities where I might be able to meet people from New York City. I may be moving there later this year because it looks like a company there wants my husband to work for them (he was headhunted!) Only I don't know anyone living there, and it's a BIG city (don't I know it; we were there for a week around my birthday in November last year) so I figure it'll be especially hard to make friends and meet people when we're there. I loved the city when I was there, though, so I'm looking forward to this opportunity and hope it works out!

My name is Dominica, Dom for short. I'm a 24 year old stay at home mum to a (nearly) 1 year old, but I don't talk about motherhood and my son all that much because I figure it doesn't really interest a good portion of my friends list that much. My main interests/hobbies include filmmaking, web development, and travelling all over the world. I'm a dual Australian/US citizen currently living in Australia, but as I said, may be moving to NYC later this year. My husband is currently working on his PhD in Law/Internet Governance. He has worked as both a lawyer and an IT consultant, so once he's finished his PhD and returns to work, you can bet I'll have a lot of time on my hands and you can understand why I don't need to work myself, and how I can afford to be a stay at home mum.

My journal is friends only, but I'll friend pretty much anyone who friends me if they have done so because they think I'm interesting and actually want to get to know me. I have recently started posting topic based entries to try and encourage people on my friends list to comment so I can get to know them better. I actually want to know you :D

For more information on me and my interests, please read my LJ profile. It's very detailed!

That's it from me. Hope to get to know some of you soon. :)

[06 Jan 2008|07:55am]

hello hello. i took a 5 month hiatus from livejournal, but now i'm back. i'm a 19 year old female college student who loves to have a good time. i'm from jersey city, nj, but i am in nyc 1/2 of the time mainly in SoHo.

i'm a sophomore at a really small school called drew university in madison, nj where i'm majoring in art history and minoring in theatre. after college, i plan on studying fashion and pursue an acting career (hopefully i succeed). i have a passion for fashion, and i've earned a rep in my school as being a "fashionista." i'm not into labels or trends much, but i like to stand out from the crowd.

other than that, i'm a concert addict! i love music, and i love the atmosphere and the energy that bands bring onstage. it's pretty much my escape from the real world. i've seen the police, beastie boys, hellogoodbye, dashboard confessional, cold war kids, incubus (my favorite band) and many others live. these are the moments i cherish the most and i cannot wait to tell my children and my grandchildren all about them.

here's a quick rundown of other things like:
movie: ghost world, breakfast at tiffany's
book: the great gatsby, persepolis
tv show: project runway, boy meets world, heroes
video game: grand theft auto series
food: jamba juice b/c it keeps me full
i consider black eyeliner as my best accessory.

so if you're convinced, add me away. `=]

[02 Jan 2008|03:55pm]

Hey there. I figured with this new year I could use some new additions to my friends list. Let me tell you some stuff about me:

I'm a 24 year old guy who lives in Brooklyn, NY where I have resided my entire life. I work in the film industry, usually as a Script Supervisor (don't worry if you don't know what it is, most people don't). Yes from time to time I do work with famous people and I'll write about it, but there is an unspoken code that I'll never break. Often I'm unemployed due to the nature of my industry. I have a deep love for tv and movies and I post about them a lot. I also love live music and go to a lot of concerts. I tend to play a good number of video games as well. I read my friends list every day and will comment if I have anything to say. I'd love to make more friends offline so it'd be great if you lived in the area and were interested in that type of thing at some point in the future, but if you're not that's cool too. I love reading all different types of journals. My only rule is that you be at least 18. All of my entries are friends only so I'll have to add you for you to read them. So basically if you want me to add you just leave a little comment here so I know you're adding me and can add you back. Here's some stuff I like:

Movies: There's really too many to list but anything by Kevin Smith, Quentin Tarantino, Robert Rodriguez, or Richard Linklater is on there.
TV: Anything Joss Whedon, Lost, Heroes, West Wing, Homicide, The Wire, House, Veronica Mars, HIMYM, Chuck, Friday Night Lights, Pushing Daisies, and about a million more.
Music: Pearl Jam, Le Tigre, Dresden Dolls, The Gossip, Guns N' Roses, Led Zeppelin, Charlotte Martin, Fiona Apple

So add away.
